Serena, Venus Williams Win Wimbledon 2012 Women's Doubles Title

Serena and Venus Williams win 5th Wimbledon doubles title as the sisters show no signs of quitting

Those two daughters, Serena and Venus, have now combined for 10 of the last 13 Wimbledon titles and 21 majors overall. Once, they spoke about retiring at an early age, moving on with their lives to endeavors such as fashion design and acting. Now they can’t get enough tennis, playing into their 30s.

They were still at it late Saturday night, winning their fifth Wimbledon doubles title and 13th doubles title at a major. They hadn’t played doubles here for a couple of years because of injury and health problems, yet it was not a problem for them at all. They remain practically unbeatable at this event, because their searing serves elicit weak returns to be smashed immediately for volley winners. They defeated Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic in the final, 7-5, 6-4, and beat the local curfew by a few minutes.

Serena and Venus Williams win Wimbledon doubles championship

The victory came in Venus and Serena's first tournament together in two years. They entered as a warm-up for the upcoming Summer Olympics, in which they'll enter as two-time defending gold medalists.

It was the sister's 14th Grand Slam doubles title, the third most in history. In each of their five championships at Wimbledon, one of them also hoisted the Venus Rosewater Dish in the singles competition, as Serena did on Saturday afternoon.

"[The day was] very long," Serena said after the match. "I was just happy to do it with singles and continue it with doubles."

Serena, Venus Williams Reach Wimbledon Doubles Final

Serena will play Agnieszka Radwanska in the singles final as she looks for her fifth Wimbledon title. A few hours after that, the Williams sisters are scheduled to go for their fifth title in doubles as well. They will be playing Czechs Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, who beat Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone of Italy in the other semifinal.

Serena said her busy schedule shouldn't affect her chances against Radwanska.

"It would be good to have a day off," she said, "but also it's good to practice in doubles because I get a lot of match play, practice some returns, some serves."

Wimbledon 2012 Scores: Serena, Venus Williams Win Women's Doubles Title

The Williams sisters captured their fifth Wimbledon doubles title by defeating Hlavackova and Hradecka in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Venus, who has five Wimbledon singles titles of her own, was upset and bounced out in the first round of the 2012 Championships singles tournament.

It would seem that Serena has fully recovered from her embarrassing turn at the 2012 French Open, as she was bounced out in the opening round of a Grand Slam event for the first time in her career.
